I loved you, part 5
This is the final part of our reading of the famous "I Loved You" poem by A. S. Pushkin. We’ll be reading the last two lines, word by word.
Я вас любил так искренно, так нежно,
Как дай вам Бог любимой быть другим.
Literal translation by U. R. Bowie:
I loved you so sincerely, so tenderly,
As may God grant you to be loved by another.
Я вас любил так искренно, так нежно,
The line, in the past tense, expresses the poet’s sincere and tender love that no longer exists.
Я – I (pronoun, subject, nominative case).
вас – you (pronoun, direct object, accusative case), nominative case: вы.
любил – loved (verb, past tense, masculine singular), infinitive form: любить (to love).

так – so (in this poem it is used as a conjunction, paired with another conjunction, “как” in the following line, a dependent clause).
Also an adverb, meaning so (so slowly, so often, so tenderly)
Example (adverb):
Мечтал я о тебе так часто, так давно,
за много лет до нашей встречи,
когда сидел один, и кралась ночь в окно,
и перемигивались свечи. - В. Набоков
Example (conjunction):
Нужно так понять непреложность плана, чтоб ничто не затмило его. - Е. Рерих
The word так may also be used in fixed expressions, such as:
так называемый - so-called
так что - therefore
так как - since
искренно – sincerely (adverb), also: "honestly" or "with heartfelt truth."
Examples:
Всё в ней так искренно и мило,
Так все движенья хороши;
Ничто лазури не смутило
Её безоблачной души. - Ф. Тютчев
Анна Андреевна искренно плакала, от всей души сожалея моего героя… - Ф. М. Достоевский
Искренне is another version of the same word. Both are equal; there is no "more or less correct" version between them. But, “Искренне ваш” is a fixed expression meaning “Sincerely yours,” with the only variant ending in “-e” accepted as norm.
так – same as above.
нежно – tenderly (adverb), also: "gently" or "delicately."
Examples:
Она обняла его за шею и нежно привлекла его голову к себе на грудь. - А. И. Куприн
Они любили друг друга так долго и нежно,
С тоской глубокой и страстью безумно-мятежной!
Но, как враги, избегали признанья и встречи,
И были пусты и хладны их краткие речи. - М. Ю Лермонтов
Как дай вам Бог любимой быть другим.
Как – as (conjunction, paired with the conjunctions “так” from the independent clause in the preceding line).
Так, … как translates to “so, … as” in English.

дай – give (imperative, verb, 2nd person singular), infinitive form: дать (to give).
вам – to you (pronoun, dative case), nominative case: вы.
Бог – God (noun, nominative case)
“Дай Бог” or “Дай Вам Бог” - are fixed expressions of hope or a wish similar to “God willing” in English.
Examples:
Дай вам Бог успеха внешнего, — и внутреннего мира, — прибавил он и протянул руку. - Л. Н. Толстой
— Скажи, родимый,
Будет ли война?
— И я сказал:
— Наверное, не будет.
— Дай Бог, дай Бог...
Ведь всем не угодишь,
А от раздора пользы не прибудет... - Н. Рубцов
любимой – beloved (adjective, instrumental case, feminine), nominative form: любимая (beloved).
быть – to be (verb, infinitive).
любимой быть (also: быть любимой) - to be beloved.
Examples:
Никто не умеет так постоянно хотеть быть любимым. - М. Ю. Лермонтов
Подумайте, что может быть ужаснее, как любить и не быть любимым! - И. С. Тургенев
другим – by another (adjective, instrumental case, masculine or neuter), nominative form: другой (another).
Also: "by someone else" or "by another man."
Examples:
Дочитаю печальную книгу,
что забыта другим впопыхах.

на вставных наиграю зубах. - Б. Рыжий
Пускай ты выпита другим,
Но мне осталось, мне осталось

My love for you was fervent, tender-true,
As by God’s grace may you be loved again.
