Я вас любил: любовь еще, быть может,
В душе моей угасла не совсем;
Но пусть она вас больше не тревожит;
Я не хочу печалить вас ничем.
Я вас любил безмолвно, безнадежно,
То робостью, то ревностью томим;
Я вас любил так искренно, так нежно,
Как дай вам Бог любимой быть другим.
А. С. Пушкин, 1829
Alexander Pushkin's famous poem "I Loved You..." is believed to be dedicated to Anna Olenina, a young aristocrat from St. Petersburg. She was the daughter of Alexei Olenin, the president of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. Talented and well-educated, she spoke multiple languages, composed plays, and studied music under Mikhail Glinka.
Pushkin met Anna at her family’s house, and by 1827, rumors spread that he was deeply in love with her. He even considered marrying her, but she rejected his proposal. This unfulfilled love likely inspired "I Loved You...", a poem expressing deep yet resigned emotions. Pushkin captures the pain of lost love while wishing happiness to his beloved. Though Anna did not return his feelings, she remained an important muse for the poet.
